Is Drinking Bottled Water Enough To Keep You Safe From Toxins?

You’ve switched to bottled water instead of the tap and think you’re receiving the full benefits of water filtration. Sadly, you have yet to win the war against contaminants in your home water supply. Water impurities not only damage water-using appliances, but any toxins present are leaking into your shower and bathwater, as well.

What’s in your Bath?

Toxins in your water supply can be inhaled or absorbed in the shower or tub! I know, it’s a scary thought. The amount and type of contamination in municipal or rural drinking water differ, but largely, according to a study reported by the Clean Water Action Project in 2002,  there are over 2,100 chemicals in U.S. drinking water that have been studied and are known to cause various adverse health effects. The chemicals include 97 known carcinogens, 82 mutagens (cancer contributors), 23 compounds known to produce tumors, and 28 poisons. That’s 190 cancer-causing and poisonous chemicals in your bath water that can make their way into your body through inhalation of the vaporized compound or absorbed through the skin when steam opens your skin’s pores. All of these chemicals are known to cause cancer in varying amounts.

Ian Anderson writes in an issue of New Scientist, “Taking showers is a health risk, according to research presented last week in a meeting of the American Chemical Society. Showers – and to a lesser extent baths – lead to a greater exposure to toxic chemicals contained in water supplies than does drinking water. The chemicals evaporate out of the water and are inhaled. They can also spread through the house and be inhaled by others.”

Is it Dangerous to Bathe in Unfiltered water?

Simply put, you can breathe and absorb more impurities in the shower than if you drank the same amount of water! Showers send about 50 to 80 percent of these chemicals into the air, ready to be inhaled.

When water is heated, it also vaporizes the mono-chloramine, dichloramine, and trichloramine, common forms of chlorine found in our water supply. These respiratory and skin irritants can also be inhaled or absorbed through open pores. Chlorinated water on the skin can dry it out, which can cause flare-ups for a variety of skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis.

What Do I Do?

Don’t stop the fight for cleaner water by simply drinking bottled water. Upgrade your home with a Whole House filtration system today. You start bathing in the purest filtered water straight from the showerhead!

Whole house water filters provide water filtration at the point of entry to your home. They help ensure quality water throughout your home because clean, filtered water emerges from every water source in the house.
